solar panels-off the grid-Power Home Solar-installation

Can I go ‘off the grid’ with my solar panel system?

The single greatest reason for homeowners to install a solar system is to reduce reliance on your power company and its notoriously rising rates. Instead of continually renting power from the utility company, why not invest in something that locks in your rate for solar power and will let you own your power once your system is paid off?

Cutting the cord from the power company altogether, or going “off the grid,” as it’s frequently called, is indeed possible for solar customers that add battery-plus-storage solutions to their solar system. Power Home Solar does not offer those solutions at this time because of the extensive cost it adds to your solar purchase.

That’s why Power Home interconnects with your power provider and instead takes advantage of your power company’s net metering, which gives homeowners credits for excess energy produced by their solar systems. If your panels are producing more power than your home needs at any one time, that power gets pushed back to the power grid, and your utility company pays you back for the excess energy, lowering your power bill.

In essence, net metering captures the same effect of battery-plus-storage solutions without the prohibitive cost. Whenever you need additional power, your connection to the grid supplies it.

The one drawback to being connected to your power grid is that solar panels stop producing energy during power outages. That’s done for safety reasons to prevent an effect called “islanding,” which would occur if your panels continue sending power over lines that are damaged. Any utility worker handling broken lines with electricity still passing through them would be placed in a very dangerous situation. Thus, your panels stop producing.

It is possible to go off the grid with the battery-plus-storage solution, but that is not something Power Home Solar provides at this time. People do ask about it, though, and for those who do, this one is for you!

If you want to go solar without a battery-plus-storage solution, Power Home wants to be the company you choose to do the installation. With our innovative solar program, homeowners can go solar for $0 up-front cost, save money on their electric bills, and generate their own clean energy. The solar panels installed on your home are American made and come with a 25-year warranty, with many panels expected to last well beyond that.
