Amazon made a pledge five years ago to commit to 100 percent renewable energy usage, and this week, the company put a date on that goal, with CEO Jeff Bezos announcing that Amazon will meet the requirements set forth by the Paris Agreement 10 years ahead of schedule.
Amazon, which employs more than 600,000 workers globally, announced The Climate Pledge in partnership with Global Optimism, an organization focused on promoting positive social and environmental campaigns around the world.
As part of Amazon’s pledge, the organization has agreed to rely entirely on renewable energy, such as solar power, by 2030 and to reach zero net carbon emissions by 2040. To reach its goal, the company will continuously monitor its greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, and reduce material use.
How Will Amazon Accomplish 100% Renewable by 2030?
Amazon will be utilizing 100,000 electric delivery vehicles throughout the company by 2030, with the first 10,000 on the road as early as 2022, and it is also investing $100 million in reforestation efforts. As the transportation industry is one of the most impactful in terms of greenhouse emissions, this announcement is a big one. The investment in reforestation is in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and commits to restoring and protecting forests, wetlands and peatlands around the globe.
As one of the world’s largest corporations, Amazon’s news is huge, though its renewable commitment timeline trails other companies such as Apple and Google, which already are powered by 100 percent renewable energy. However, Amazon’s commitment is still one that makes a move toward protecting the planet and ensuring a better tomorrow for future generations.
Even though the company has made such a commitment, a small fraction of Amazon workers say it’s still not enough. One thousand Amazon workers planned a walk-out for September 20, stating that the company should up its zero net carbon emissions target to 2030.
It will be interesting to see which other companies may follow suit in signing The Climate Pledge. Renewable energy, such as solar power, provides a clean source of electricity for users everywhere, and we share Amazon’s commitment to bettering the environment.
