Cincinnati is second Ohio city to set goal for 100 percent renewable energy
The calls for cities and states to move to 100 percent renewable energy goals is well underway, and the latest city to join those is one that falls into POWERHOME Solar’s business footprint — Cincinnati, Ohio.
Late last week, the Cincinnati city council approved a resolution to move the Queen City to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035, making it the 100th municipality to achieve or set that renewable energy goal. This goal makes Cincinnati the second Ohio city to commit to using 100 percent renewable energy after Cleveland did so in September. Cleveland’s 100 percent goal is to be met by 2050.
“It has become clear that cities will lead the global effort to fight climate change, and Cincinnati is on the front lines,” Cincinnati mayor John Cranley said, per a Sierra Club release. “I am encouraged by the changes we are making, but we have a lot of work left to do.”
It is absolutely encouraging to hear the growing support that renewable energy has, knowing the massive amounts of greenhouse gases produced when fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas are burned to produce electricity. The Sierra Club estimates that 15 percent of the U.S. (48.7 million people) already lives in a city or state that has set a 100 percent renewable energy mandate.
That’s a healthy percentage, but there’s two takeaways from that. There’s still 85 percent of the U.S. that hasn’t yet committed to making 100 percent renewables use a goal or reality, and even as these communities make these commitments, the timeline to reach 100 percent is often a decade or more away.
