Federal climate change report showcases need to move more quickly to clean energy

Climate change is here, and without action taken to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the U.S. will face significant economic and health-related consequences, according to a federal report released late last week.

There are some very scary facts that come from this report that indicate just how much things are changing for the worse. And it’s not just related to certain parts of the country — the report notes that changes are being felt no matter where you live, including the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast — areas where POWERHOME Solar works to install solar panels for homeowners. Among those facts:

  • Sixteen of the last 17 years have been the warmest ever recorded.
  • America’s trillion-dollar coastal property market is threatened by rising sea levels.
  • Global average temperature has increased by about 1.8°F from 1901 to 2016, with the evidence of the warming consistently pointing to greenhouse-gas emissions as the dominant cause.
  • Since 1980, the cost for extreme weather-related events has exceeded $1.1 trillion, and the number of these events annually that has exceeded $1 billion in cost per event (accounting for inflation) has increased significantly.

“Earth’s climate is now changing faster than at any point in the history of modern civilization, primarily as a result of human activities,” the report says. “But the severity of future impacts will depend largely on actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to the changes that will occur.”

Worse yet is that the report states that current efforts by the U.S. and other countries are not enough “to avoid substantial damages to the U.S. economy, environment, and human health and well-being over the coming decades.”

One of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions is electricity-generating plants powered by fossil fuels — including coal and natural gas. We all need electricity to power our businesses and homes, and more than 60 percent of that electricity comes from these unclean sources.

While discussing global climate change can make one feel pretty helpless when the world is populated with 7.7 billion people, any action that people can take must begin with a single step. We all can take steps toward using cleaner, greener energy. With solar energy making up a little more than 1 percent of total U.S. generation of electricity, there is a long way to go, but the time to act is now. Solar panels emit no carbon dioxide or noise pollution — all they do is sit on your roof or ground-mounted array and generate power for your home.

POWERHOME Solar wants to be the company you work with to help reduce your carbon footprint and heed the call for action that this report seeks. Installing solar also helps you lower your electric bill, which is a win for your pocketbook. When you finish paying off your panels, your solar payment goes away, and you will be producing absolutely free energy for the duration of your solar panel system.

With our innovative solar program, homeowners can go solar for $0 up-front cost. The solar panels installed on your home are American-made and come with a 30-year warranty, with many panels expected to last well beyond that.
