Duke Energy’s 2019 NC solar rebates run out after only 2 days
Two days after Duke Energy reopened its state-mandated North Carolina Solar Rebate Program, the utility notified state regulators that the funds set aside for homeowners for 2019 already have been accounted for.
This is the second year of a five-year, $62 million program where residential, commercial and nonprofit customers can receive money for new solar installations. There are remaining 2019 funds available for businesses in Duke Energy Progress territory, as well as for nonprofits statewide. The program will continue through 2022.
The demand for the opening of the program last July was such that funds earmarked for homeowners were exhausted within two weeks. That left a number of customers who signed up unable to benefit from the rebate that gives customers a credit of 60 cents per watt, up to 10 kilowatts of installed solar panels, or $6,000.
Because of the high demand, customers who signed up in 2018 but did not get funds were placed on a wait list to get 2019 funds, per a North Carolina Utilities Commission order. According to Duke Energy spokesperson Randy Wheeless, that was a one-time exception. That means that there will be no similar carryover expected for 2020.
However, 2019 customers who were able to submit an application before this year’s window closed but currently do not have funds will be placed on a wait list in case prior applications are rejected.
What the high demand shows is that the interest in solar remains incredibly high, especially with the sunsetting of the 30 percent federal tax credit at the end of 2019. If you want to go solar and get the best value for your money, the time to act is now.
With our innovative solar program, homeowners in North Carolina and the other five states in our company footprint can go solar for $0 out of pocket, save money on their electric bills, and generate their own clean energy. The solar panels installed on your home are American-made and come with a 30-year warranty, with many panels expected to last well beyond that.
