Wins for Warriors, founded by Justin Verlander, to host Second Annual Patriot Ruck in Detroit

DETROIT – Houston Astros pitcher, and former Detroit Tiger, Justin Verlander is bringing his Wins for Warriors Annual Patriot Ruck back to Detroit for a second year.

The 2nd Annual Patriot Ruck presented by Power Home Solar will take place on Sunday, September 9, 2018, from 9:00am-Noon. The Ruck is a military-style walk through Downtown Detroit to honor all military members, veterans and first responders who have served and sacrificed since the attacks on 9/11, Patriot Day.

“The Patriot Ruck is a special way to honor and ‘carry the weight’ for those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom,” said Verlander. “It’s a great day that brings civilians, military members, veterans and first responders together to build memories and camaraderie, while remembering, honoring, and supporting our heroes on the front lines.”

The 2nd Annual Patriot Ruck is already receiving strong support and involvement from the local military community, with about 1,000 participants/people expected at the event! The 1st Battalion, 24th Marines have just announced that this event will be their official 2018 Family Day, bringing in military families from across the state of Michigan and Ohio to participate.

The Ruck is set up like race, walk or run, but participants are encouraged to put weight on their backs with a “rucksack” or weighted backpack, to simulate the required physical training ruck marches for all branches of military service and the weight carried by first responders.

The Wins for Warriors 2nd Annual Patriot Ruck will begin at the GM Renaissance Center parking lot at Beaubien St. & Atwater St. with the option of a three-mile or six-mile route along Detroit’s Riverfront. The Ruck kicks off at 9:00AM with a special ceremony including a National Anthem performance by United States Air Force Veteran and Ferndale Police Detective Brendan Moore. The family-friendly event is sponsored by Power Home Solar & Roofing and will include a fun festival area with a climbing wall, games, activities, face-painting, food and music upon completion of the Ruck!

Wins for Warriors has also partnered with ESGR, a Department of Defense program, to include the special veteran and military resource and hiring expo at the Patriot Ruck.

Anyone wishing to participate in the 2nd Annual Patriot Ruck can register online at now through Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 7:00 PM EST. Walk-up registrations will also be accepted on the day of the event.

New this year, Wins for Warriors is launching a Virtual Ruck Option to allow participants who can’t make the Detroit Ruck to support the event and ruck on their own. They can sign up from anywhere in the world and receive the event’s commemorative flag and shirt via mail.

Registration costs for the 2nd Annual Patriot Ruck include a $35 Standard Registration Fee that includes an exclusive Under Armour Patriot Ruck T-Shirt, a $25 Discount Military, Veteran & First Responder Fee that also includes the Under Armour Patriot Ruck T-Shirt, or a $10 Discount Military, Veteran & First Responder Fee. All registered participants will receive a Patriot Ruck Shirt (depending on package), Ruck Bib, Map of the Course, Real-Time Photo Uploads, Finish-Line Photo Opportunity, and a commemorative Wins for Warriors Flag.

There are no age requirements or rucksack weight requirements for the 2nd Annual Patriot Ruck. This ruck is extremely family and beginner friendly, and while participants are encouraged to safely carry a backpack or rucksack based on their weight and level of physical fitness, it is not a requirement to participate. All proceeds from the Patriot Ruck will benefit the Wins for Warriors Foundation.

Additional supporting sponsors of the 2nd Annual Patriot Ruck include Merrill Lynch, Comerica Bank, Tim Hortons, and the Detroit Riverfront Conservatory. Sponsorships are still available, please contact us for more information.
