Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf wants his state to strive for reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and earlier this week he signed an executive order to try and make that happen.
The order states that Pennsylvania will be aiming for a 26 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, based on 2005 levels, and an 80 percent reduction by 2050. That’s in line with goals set by other states as they seek to provide cleaner environments for their citizens. A federal report released in November links greenhouse gas emissions with global warming, with 16 of the last 17 years having been the warmest ever recorded.
The good news, according to The Associated Press writer Marc Levy, is that the 2025 goal seems well within reach, as federal data indicates that Pennsylvania’s carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by more than 20 percent between 2005-2016, largely because power companies are shifting from coal to natural gas to generate more of their electricity. According to federal data cited by The Associated Press, Pennsylvania is the fourth-biggest emitter of carbon dioxide in the U.S., the third-biggest producer of coal and the nation’s second-biggest natural gas state.
“We’re about halfway to where I want us to be, so we have some work to do,” Wolf said, per The Associated Press report. “But I think part of what we have to do is say here’s our goal, here’s how we’re going to be measuring this and we all need to get to a better place.”
POWERHOME SOLAR EDUCATION: Is solar viable in Pennsylvania? You bet it is!
While such an order is a step in the right direction, the order is non-binding, which means future governors do not have to follow it after Wolf’s second term ends in 2023. Legislative action must be taken for this order to be followed for the long haul. Wolf has not yet put forth any legislation on how to achieve these goals, so that is a hurdle that must be cleared to reach his longer-term vision.
