Don’t believe in value of energy efficiency? Here’s the data behind it
As part of every solar panel installation done by POWERHOME Solar, we include an energy efficiency package (EEP) that lowers your energy consumption and therefore reduces the number of solar panels needed to adequately energize your home. Put another way, we’re not giving you the keys to a Ferrari solar system with a Geo Metro engine. We want your home operating at maximum efficiency when your solar panels are installed.
POWERHOME Solar knows that its EEP can reduce your home’s consumption by 25 percent. What are the things that we include that get to that number? There are five things — added blown insulation in your attic, a Nest thermostat, a hot water heater blanket, 20 LED light bulbs and an attic staircase insulator — that account for that. But don’t just take our word for it — let some federal experts showcase just how that number can be reached.
Added blown insulation: The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that “homeowners can save an average of 11 percent on total energy costs by air sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and accessible basement rim joists.” For our part, we simply add insulation in your attic. So that should save approximately 10 percent.
Nest thermostat: The Department of Energy writes that the average customer could save up to 10 percent on heating and cooling bills by turning back your thermostat 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day. That means in the winter lowering your thermostat by that much, and in the summer, increasing your home’s temperature by that same range. Considering many people aren’t home during the day working for that length of time, that can easily be done.
Better yet is the option POWERHOME offers in installing a Nest thermostat, which will detect what temperatures you like at what time, personalizing and maximizing your efficiency. It turns itself down when you leave the house, and you can control it anywhere from your smartphone or tablet. Nest even reports on its website that “independent studies showed that (a Nest) saved people an average of 10 percent to 12 percent on heating bills and 15 percent on cooling bills.”
Hot water heater blanket: Simply wrapping your tank with a thermal blanket can save 7-16 percent annually on your water heating needs, according to the DOE. Think of how warm grandma’s hugs are. Same difference!
LED light bulbs: POWERHOME will provide 20 LED light bulbs that you can use to replace some or all of the light fixtures in your home. What’s the benefit there? Per the DOE, “ENERGY STAR-qualified LEDs use only 20 percent–25 percent of the energy and last 15 to 25 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs they replace.” They cost more up-front but save more in the long run, shine brighter and emit very little heat. You can touch an LED bulb hours after it’s been turned on and not get burned. Try that on an incandescent bulb, and you are sure to feel it.

Attic staircase insulator: Unlike the rest of your attic, attic doors aren’t as fully insulated, meaning that heat and cool air can escape much more easily there. An attic staircase insulator retains the warm/cool air. POWERHOME estimates that it can save 2-3 percent on your electricity costs.
The effectiveness of all of these improvements will vary depending on the current level of efficiency in your home. But if your home is one that stands to truly benefit from all these upgrades, that’s how you can raise the energy efficiency performance level of your home by 25 percent. Your home will be using less energy to fill its power needs, and you’ll need fewer solar panels to do the job as a result.
With our innovative solar program, homeowners can go solar for $0 up-front cost, save money on their electric bills, and generate their own energy. The solar panels installed on your home are American-made and come with a 30-year warranty, with many panels expected to last well beyond that.
