NEW YORK — The latest page of POWERHOME SOLAR’s success story brings us to New York, where five members of the company’s leadership team were on hand at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square on Tuesday to collect two bronze pieces of Stevie Awards hardware – one for Energy Industry Innovation of the Year, and one for Fastest Growing Company of the Year (up to 2,500 employees).
POWERHOME’s inclusion allows it to join a who’s who list of companies that won Stevie Awards in 2019, including American Express, Bank of America, Cigna, Fidelity Investments, IBM and T-Mobile. Prior winners have included Acer Inc., Apple, Ford Motor Company, Procter & Gamble and Samsung, among others.
POWERHOME’s growth since beginning business in 2015 with 15 employees has been spectacular, with the company generating over $100 million in revenue for the first time in 2018. Now, the North Carolina-based company serves customers in eight states (after recently adding Missouri) and has nearly 700 employees as it continues fulfilling a mission of building a movement of clean, green solar energy. Over 170 companies were honored at the awards banquet, with each winner having their moment on stage. You may have seen ours shared on social media previously.
“Everyone has the same mission and the same goal of what our motto is – BAM – Building a Movement, one panel, one customer, one employee at a time,” POWERHOME CEO Jayson Waller said. “Everyone that works for POWERHOME, they’re passionate about what they do. The culture is there. They believe in it. It’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle.”

POWERHOME SOLAR wouldn’t have had a chance to win these awards had it failed to navigate significant bumps encountered during its first two years of operation – a time frame when approximately 1/3 of all businesses fail. After losing money through its first 18 months of business, Waller knew things had to change to make the business work in spite of expiring solar tax credits in North Carolina.
“For us, that was a great learning experience and confidence builder for us to be able really to look far ahead not just a few years but the next few decades in how we’re going to model things,” POWERHOME COO Kevin Klink said.
Waller ended up firing his sales manager and project manager and assuming a direct day-to-day role in all aspects of the business. He even sold his home to keep operations running. His vision, his force and the work of his team leveled those bumps, leading to the up-and-to-the-right growth where the business has been recognized for its achievements on local, regional and national levels.
“All in all, I’m extremely satisfied, if I can be satisfied,” said POWERHOME president Steve Murphy, who joined the company in 2017 to help supercharge the company’s growth. “It’s kind of an oxymoron because you’re never really satisfied. But am I pleased with the progress we’ve made and the amount of time we made it in? Yeah. You’d probably be hard pressed to find very many companies that have had this much growth – healthy growth in this short of time, and continue to do so.”
Other awards POWERHOME has won
Local recognition has come from the Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council, where it named POWERHOME as its Emerging Business of the Year in 2018. Regional recognition came from Waller being named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Southeast finalist earlier this year (winners will be announced in late June). National recognition has come from being ranked among the top 100 fastest growing companies by Inc. in 2017, along with being No. 12 nationally among residential rooftop solar installers.
Those honors came as a leadup to these American Business Awards, which were created in 2002 to “honor and generate public recognition of the achievements and positive contributions of organizations and working professionals worldwide.” There’s simply no better place than New York, the epicenter of the business universe, to celebrate all these accomplishments.
“It’s the energy around the leadership team, and the product in the way we are attacking going green, that I really enjoy,” said POWERHOME CFO Juan Ramirez, who himself is a finalist for the Charlotte Business Journal’s CFO of the Year Award. “All the other companies I’ve worked for offered a product that was already available, but it was not making a difference. I think the fact it is making a difference is what excites me with this company, and the energy around it.”

The difference is felt at every level of the company, and that’s not something lost on Brandon Goodnight, POWERHOME’s vice president of sales. He credits Waller and his co-founder, Klink, for finding the path to success.
“When Jayson asked me to join the company, I was a little nervous at first because it was a new business at the time,” Goodnight said. “But I knew that partnering with Jayson and Kevin would take myself to new levels and break me out of the comfort zone that I was in. If I was ever going to develop into something larger, I knew these guys could take it to the next level.”
