Survey shows strong support to extend federal solar tax credit

Those in the solar industry know that the next three years are key for residential solar installations because of the presence of the federal Investment Tax Credit. That credit leads to huge savings for consumers, with the current number saving customers 30 percent of the cost of their solar and storage installations.

But the thing is, the 30 percent credit goes away at the end of 2019, and will be replaced by a 26 percent credit in 2020 and a 22 percent credit in the following year before sunsetting altogether. Thus from a cost standpoint, there has never been a better time to go solar than now.

But among solar installers across the U.S., there is a significant appetite to see that credit extended. Per the fourth annual Solar Installer Survey conducted by EnergySage and NABCEP, nearly 80 percent of the 870 installers surveyed said they agree or strongly agree with Congress taking steps to permanently extend the credit. Another interesting aspect of that survey is that 30 percent of solar installers say that their brand recognition is a key driver of their success. At POWERHOME Solar, we know that’s the case. We’ve developed partnerships with four NFL teams and have earned other key awards and honors. All of that has played a part in driving POWERHOME’s success. You can see the full survey here.

“At a time when it’s become clear that solar energy can provide clean energy and create jobs and economic growth, this survey shows that installers are deeply engaged in growing the industry and supportive of sensible bipartisan policy,” Solar Energy Industries Association president Abigail Ross Hopper said in a statement. “The growing role of storage and community solar as a part of these companies’ portfolios demonstrates the continued emphasis on new opportunities in the solar industry.”

Because the extension is not a guarantee, there is one way for consumers to guarantee yourself that you can get the maximum tax credit possible, and that’s by going solar in 2019. As long as you have your solar system installed by Dec. 31, 2019, your installation will qualify for the credit and set yourself up to maximize your savings.
